Girls Night Out....of a different kind

So, I had another Girls' Night Out last night, but this one was with my two amazing daughters, Courtney & Caitlin. Hugh is out of town, and Connor was at a sleep over, so the girls and I went out to dinner and then to Barnes & Noble - which is one of my favorite places on earth. :) Then we came home and watched this adorable movie called "Stalking Santa" (I know it's not even close to Christmas, but I've been wanting to see it). It's about a "Santalogist" who is out to prove that Santa is real. It's filmed like a documentary, and it's pretty funny. A little slow, but the ending is totally worth it. It'll make you believe. :)

My Hobby

I have this hobby that I love. I love making DVDs out of still pictures set to music. I've made several. I started by making one for Courtney & Connor when they were baptized. I then made one for Caitlin too. I've also made one for Hugh when he was promoted to captain, one for Kort to give to Amy on their one year anniversary (it was all of their wedding pictures), one of Kolby's wrestling career, one of Hugh's family, and my favorite one.....a half hour long video of old high school pictures that we showed at our 20 year reunion this past summer. Anyway, I'm figuring out a way to turn this in to some sort of business. I love doing them. I can do them from home. And everyone can use a DVD of pictures set to music!!! Wedding receptions, anniversaries, graduations, baptisms, reunions, Christmas gifts....you name it, and a DVD would make a perfect gift! So, if anyone is in the market for something like that, let me know. This is one that I made for my nieces. Their best friends moved to Massachusets (I have no idea if I spelled that right) and they brought over all of these pictures and they "directed" the DVD. I love it that they have all of these pictures of their little group of friends. Anyway, watch it if you want. It's about 10 minutes long. Enjoy!

Happy Fall!!

Can you believe it's October 1?? And it's still over 100 degrees? What's up with that? I love the fall. I want to take a drive up north so we can actually see leaves changing color. The only color change we see here is when Hugh scalps the lawn to reseed for winter grass. Not quite the same as the beautiful reds and oranges of fall leaves. I love this picture of Central Park. I wish I was there! I've really been wanting to go there again, and hopefully will soon. Right Amy?? Maybe after the first of the year. Anyway, I'm going to break out my "fall decorations" and light up a Pumpkin Pie scented candle and see if I can't get my brain to think it's cooling down outside. Soon, right?? Yes, soon. That's what I keep telling myself.

I remember...

Today would have been Austin Scott Chase's 12th birthday. And tomorrow would be Spencer Clark Chase's 12th birthday. It's funny, because I think about them all of the time, even through I never really knew them. I just know they are my sons. I don't know WHY I lost them (well, physically I know why....but I don't know the eternal reasoning behind it), and I don't even really need to know why. The biggest lesson I learned from my experience was that I had to understand that I would never understand it. What I do know was that their short time on earth was a part of Heavenly Father's plan for me...and for them. And I also know that I will have the opportunity to be with them again.
I remember every detail from the time I found out I was pregnant with them until the time we buried them. We found out a few days before Mother's Day that I was pregnant. Isn't that lovely? So fitting. We found out a few weeks later that it was twins.....and a few months later that it was twin boys! I was so excited to be the Queen of the house. I remember every detail of September 20, 1996 when I started having contractions and after three calls to the doctor we finally drove across town to Good Samaritan Hospital. I remember walking in and being led to the very last bed in the triage unit. I remember the look on the nurses face when she realized that I was fully dialated and that I was going to deliever immediately. I remember the panic that washed over Hugh and I as it settled in what exactly that meant. I remember the way they rushed me to a room and tilted my bed so my head was lower than my feet. I remember them pumping me full of drugs that made me get sick. And then I remember the wait. Each minute that went by was a tick tock of hope that maybe I would be able to keep them inside of me. Friday led to Saturday that lead to Sunday that lead to Monday. And Hugh never left my side. My mom said that she witnessed true love when she watched Hugh brush my teeth because I couldn't do it for myself. Monday afternoon my water broke and tini tiny little Austin Scott was born just after 3 pm. He tried to fight, but he was just to tiny and underdeveloped. He looked perfect from the outside, but his insides weren't. I remember the look on my brother's face when he walked in with the nurse holding my son who was so tiny they had to dress him in doll clothes (and I still have them). He died in my arms about 4 hours later surrounded my a few family members and a couple of friends. They kept him in the nursery to await the birth of his brother. We knew it was coming. They tried to keep Spencer inside of me, but all night long I kept feeling him move lower, and lower, and lower. And then, about 4 in the morning, my water broke (exploded, more like it) and he was preparing to make his entrance. I remember being so scared because little Spencer decided to be difficult and he got stuck. A c-section wasn't advised, so the doctor literally "went in" and grabbed him and pulled him out (sorry to be so graphic). He looked so battered, but he made a little peep. I remember that being the only sound I heard come out of either one of them. He hung on for a few hours and then faded away...again in my arms. I remember it all. There were actually some funny moments during these few days....partially because I was so drugged up, and partly because I use humor to ease my pain. I went home shortly after Spencer passed way - I wanted to get out of there!!! I remember coming home to a nursery that I knew would have to come down. I remember finally getting to take a shower, and looking in the mirror at my now deflated tummy and feeling so lonely. I had never felt that kind of loneliness before. That memory still makes me cry. I remember all of the people coming over, bringing food, flowers, asking what they could do. I remember certain people going above and beyond.....the firemen who worked for Hugh so he could take time off, my then brother-in-law Elby stocking our house full of groceries, my mom planning the entire funeral. I remember the funeral and how many people came. And I remember not being able to be anywhere without Hugh. I remember waiting a few months to try again. And I remember on Valentine's Day - a few months later - finding out I was pregnant again. And I remember a few months after that giving birth to two more tiny babies - Courtney & Connor - but these two were big enough to fight. And they did, and are now 11 years old. I remember when they were 11 months old, crawling around on the floor, and me telling Hugh that I was pregnant - AGAIN. And I remember the birth of Caitlin - a whopping 6 pounds 14 ounces. She was the biggest baby I had ever seen!

I don't know why that chapter of my life played out like that. I do know that if I hadn't lost Austin & Spencer, I defintely wouldn't have had Courtney & Connor, and probably not Caitlin either. And that's all I need to know. Everything happens for a reason. Whatever that reason is. I'm glad I can talk about this and not cry. I'm glad that I can share my experience with others if it can help them. (Heidi...I love you. Hang in there.) I've thought that maybe that's why I went through this - to help others. I don't know. I'm so grateful that I had those two perfect boys here with me, if even only for a little while. I'll see them again one day. That I do know.

Tonto Natural Bridge

Yesterday we had a Young Women/Young Men day trip to the Tonto Natural Bridge, which is just north of Payson. It was a beautiful day and the bridge itself was amazing. It's the world's largest natural travertine bridge (I got that straight from the pamphlet). It's a half mile hike down there, and it surrounded but lots of water, streams, and the bridge itself has a waterfall that falls from it. Not a huge one, but enough that when you are under the bridge you get cooled off by the mist. The youth had fun hiking around, and even were brave enough to swim in one of the little ponds. The hike out was quite an effort though and my quads are feeling it today. We then were treated to a bbq of hamburgers and hot dogs and sat around and visited and played some frisbee. It was very fun and quite relaxing. The youth in our ward are amazing and I'm so glad to be working in with the Young Women! They are awesome!

A view from on top of the bridge.

This is right outside the bridge.

More prettiness. :)

Isn't this gorgeous?

It's Good to Have Friends

Courtney collects snow globes. I think she has 23 of them now and they are from all over the place. JoAnna bought her one from Paris last year and it was Courtney's favorite. Well, it broke several months ago. It was bumped off her night stand accidentally and glittery water and pieces of glass were all over the carpet. Wouldn't you know it....of all of the snow globes she had and it was the one from PARIS that fell to the floor! Not the one from San Diego....not the one from Flagstaff.....the one from PARIS!! Anyway, I don't have a lot of friends who travel to France on a regular basis, but a few weeks ago I found out that my long lost classmate, Darren Kuhnau, was going to Paris for work. So, I dropped him a note, and guess what showed up in my mail yesterday....a snow globe from Paris! So, this post is dedicated to my NYC friend.
Darren. ...you're the best!!

The kids meet Wolf

Ok, you probably know this, but I went to high school with Wolf from American Gladiators. (We knew him as Don Yates). Hugh and I see him quite often, but the kids have never met him. They have been dying for an introduction, so when I found out that WHS was having an assembly and Don was going to speaking during it, I thought I would be the cool mom and take my kids out of school so we could go to the assembly. Hugh went too. First of all, it was totally fun being at my alma mater. And it was so fun being around that kind of school spirit. The assembly was fun (and funny...like when the student dressed up as Scooby Doo didn't see the band members sitting on the floor and he tripped and fell on them....hilarious!) and Don did a great job. So, the kids accomplished their goal - meeting Wolf. Now, maybe they'll stop bugging me about it.

Courtney took this.

And Courtney had me take this one.

The kids and Wolf.

The kids on WHS Campus right in front of the old gym.

A question for Caitlin......

I asked Caitlin the other night what she liked the best about Courtney and she said, "That's hard because I like everything about her." Sweet.

Matt Hughes

Hugh stopped by Cabela's today on his way home, and Matt Hughes was there promoting some type of laser for a hunting rifle. Hugh talked to him briefly, and then came home, got Connor and went back. Connor is a big Matt Hughes fan. He's even read Matt's autobiography (I had to read it too, about 10 pages ahead of Connor at all times so I could sharpie over any swear words. LOL There weren't too many, but one is too many for my kids). Matt signed a picture for Connor, and he signed Connor's wrestling shoes! Awesome! Needless to say, Connor was very happy.
